In addition to Sunday services, we offer a variety of programs and events for members and friends of the fellowship. See the Calendar page for upcoming dates.
UU Ukulele Union
The Unitarian Universalist Ukulele Union (UUUU) hosts a one-hour ukulele strum and sing-along every Monday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 at the UUFD church. Come every week or drop in as the spirit moves you. The best way to improve is to play often, so here’s your chance!
How can you participate? If you have a ukulele, just show up! All skill levels are welcome. Many beginners think a certain level of proficiency is required before strumming with others. This is not true! Just come as you are. If you only know one chord, play that chord every time it comes around. You will soon learn another and then another and so on. We recommend that you try to learn the C chord as a starting point, then add F and G or G7. Once you know those three or four chords, you are well on your way to playing many songs.
Much of the music we play is from The Daily Ukulele: 365 Songs for Better Living. At rehearsals you will be able to share music with another member. If you decide to purchase the book, it is available on Amazon in a print and Kindle version, and local music stores may have it in stock.
So, bring your uke and your books when you have them. Or just bring yourself and your uke!
Watercolor and Zazen Meditation
Some Saturdays, 9:00am at the Emerson House
We gather and settle our minds doing some watercolor painting for about a half hour (or more). We catch up with each other’s activities and thoughts. We then sit zazen (quiet meditation) for 30 minutes, followed by reading a chapter of the Tao de Ching – and discussion, if the reading raises questions to our minds. Please call Tam Prenosil to learn if there will be meditation that Saturday.
On various Sunday afternoons throughout the winter, Jon and Jeanne host board game days at Tamarack. Details are announced at church and in the newsletter. Bring a snack, friend, game or just come!
Wednesday Night at the Movies
From time to time we host viewings and discussions of movies or documentaries on Wednesday nights. Movie suggestions are welcome.
Typically an informal gathering is held at a member’s house for the summer and winter solstices. Details are announced at church and in the newsletter. Join us for friendship, food, campfire, and fireworks.
Christmas Eve Dinner
Every Christmas Eve after service, we gather at the House of China for fellowship – a long-time UUFD tradition!
